SmartBone®, SmartBone® ORTHO, SmartBone® On Demand™ and SwissBone® are produced by combining natural mineral bone structures with bioabsorbable polymers and collagen fragments. This biomaterial combination concept allows the patient’s cells to replace bone quickly and efficiently as the biopolymers degrade, delivering excellent integration and osteogenesis. Thanks to this technology the graft mimics human bone, is mechanically strong, and withstands shaping, screws, and surgical fixation maneuvers.

SmartBone®, SmartBone® ORTHO, SmartBone® On Demand™ and SwissBone® are essentially the same products under different brand names or use indications.

Bovine bone matrix

• Has a chemical structure and morphology similar to human bone
• Is hard but not elastic and therefore quite brittle (because the mineral matrix loses its biomechanical properties when proteins are lost during cleaning processes)

Bioabsorbable polymers

• High load resistance
• High volumetric stability (>95%); polymers protect the bone from early resorption

Collagen fragments

• Promote adhesion and colonization of blood cells
• Guarantee high hydrophilicity and thus enhance the biochemical signaling cascade that supports the osteoinductive process

Human-like microstructure

The microstructure of the SmartBone® / ORTHO / On Demand™ / SwissBone® composite matrix strongly resembles human bone in open, interconnected, medium-sized porosity. It mimics the properties of healthy human bone: high biocompatibility, adequate open porosity, high mechanical performance, hydrophilicity. These grafts are designed to reduce the intrinsic variability of many other bone substitutes of natural origin. IBI offers homogeneous bone substitutes with regular microstructure, porosity, density, and mechanical properties.

Very high hydrophilicity and rapid osseointegration

Thanks to its microcomposition, SmartBone® quickly reaches about 38% w/w blood swelling, triggering the chemical signaling cascade that drives strong osseointegration. Microstructure and composition support cell colonization.

In vitro and in vivo studies

Electron microscopy of in vitro cell colonization tests showed extensive, well-structured cell formations within SmartBone® products, confirming biochemical data collected in vitro under ISO standards. Biological and histological research showed how supportive these bone substitutes are for cell adhesion and growth; mesenchymal stem cells derived from human adipose tissue colonized the scaffold appropriately in vitro and differentiated once stimulated. In vivo studies over a 4-month observation period confirmed integration by natural bone formation including cells and vessels colonizing the pores over time.
